Preparing Your Data

The Capability Scorecard uses four column slots to calculate defect rates. Two are required and two are optional.

Column Slots

Column Required Allowed Types Description Default if Not Selected
Number of Units Yes Continuous, Integer, Count Total units inspected per row
Number of Defects Yes Continuous, Integer, Count Defects found per row
Number of Opportunities No Continuous, Integer, Count Number of ways each unit could be defective Defaults to 1 per row
Name No Any type Label for each row (shown in table and Pareto charts) Defaults to row numbers (1, 2, 3...)

Formulas

Quantum XL calculates the following for each row:

  • Total Opportunities = Number of Units × Number of Opportunities
  • DPU (Defects Per Unit) = Number of Defects / Number of Units
  • DPO (Defects Per Opportunity) = Number of Defects / Total Opportunities
  • DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) = DPO × 1,000,000

A totals row at the bottom of the table sums Units, Defects, and Total Opportunities across all rows, then calculates overall DPU, DPO, and DPMO from the totals.

Common Mistakes

Avoid These Issues

  • Units and Defects must be different columns — You cannot assign the same column to both slots.
  • Invalid data is skipped — Rows where Units or Defects are null, non-numeric, or zero are excluded from the analysis.
  • Opportunities defaults to 1 — If you don't select an Opportunities column, each unit is assumed to have 1 opportunity for a defect. In this case, DPO equals DPU for every row.
  • Missing data — Empty cells in the Units or Defects columns cause that row to be skipped entirely.
